The 5 different Human Design energy types explained…
One of the most common questions I get when it comes to understanding Human Design, is ‘where do I even start?’
I get it. On first look at the bodygraph — which is the image you will be shown when you put your birth date, time and location into the free software — it can feel overwhelming. At this point many people get confused and walk away, which in my mind is a shame as there is so much magic to be found.
If there is just one thing you grasp when it comes to Human Design, make it knowing and embodying your energy type. This is the absolute foundation of you and can give you a simple and accessible place to begin. If you aren’t sure what Human Design even is then check out this post here.
There are five energy types in Human Design. Each one has it’s own beautiful qualities and way of operating in the world. There is no hierarchy here, every single type is vital and needed in this world.
Your energy type gives you insight into how your energy works and how you are designed to move through the world. Each energy type has a different aura (energetic field) around you, which when understood and worked with, enhances your magnetism and supports you in finding your true flow when it comes to life and your sacred business.
Understanding your energy type, without needing to dive any further into the chart, can be genuinely life changing.
Each energy type has a Strategy - which is how you can flow and grow with life in the most aligned way. When operating in harmony with your Strategy it is likely to bring a lot more ease, attract the ‘right’ opportunities, and fuel your life force. On the flipside, if you are not working in alignment with your Strategy, you may find yourself facing more resistance and stagnancy, and generally feel as though things aren’t flowing.
You will also see that there is a signature and not-self theme for each energy type. I view these as little messengers, or signals, that tell us when we are living in aligned with our energy type, and when we are out of sync with it. I will talk more on these in a later article.
Before I share more on each energy type, if you haven’t already, download your free chart here or here so that you can get full understanding on how you are designed to engage with the world.
It can also be useful (and fun) to look up the charts of your nearest and dearest (children, partners, close friends, family members) so that you can gain a little more insight into understanding how you may differ from those around you.
Manifestors: The Initiators (approx. 9% of the population)
Manifestors are here to initiate and turn inspiration into action. They are designed to act on an urge and forge their own path. Often innovative, driven, bold, and a little mysterious, Manifestors are truly powerful and carry a big energetic impact. They have the potential to create real ripple effects and lasting impact in the world around them when they are aware of their energy and using their strategy.
Strategy: To Inform
This isn’t about asking for permission — it is about clear communication and keeping people in the loop. When a Manifestor keeps people informed, especially those who might be impacted by their actions, things move with far more ease and far less resistance. It can feel unnatural at first, especially if there is a lot of conditioning to unravel as Manifestors often carry the fear of being blocked from doing what they want to, but with practice it can make a huge difference to them living out their purpose and passions.
Signature Theme: Peace · Not-Self Theme: Anger
Generators — The Life-force (approx. 36% of the population)
Generators are creative forces, here to dance with life and turn inspiration into form. They are the life-force of our world — the builders, the makers, the ones who are here to master something that truly satisfies them and bring things to life. Generators have a big magnetic aura that attracts others when they are doing what genuinely lights them up. It is vital that they follow what excites them, and know when to say NO to things, in order to sustain their energy.
Strategy: To Respond
This is not about sitting still and waiting. The Generator strategy is about living life and being open and present to what the world is offering them to respond to and then tuning into the gut (sacral) in order to decide whether it is a clear YES or a No. When Generators are following this strategy, they will become more and more magnetic to opportunities and naturally their path unfolds in the most aligned way.
Signature Theme: Satisfaction · Not-Self Theme: Frustration
Manifesting Generators — The Multi-Passionates (approx. 32% of the population)
Manifesting Generators are thought of as multi-dimensional time-benders, here to follow a non-linear creative path. They are at their core the same as Generators, here to respond and follow their sacral YES, but they tend to move fast, often have many projects running simultaneously and are designed to reinvent themselves over and over again. The ‘career path’ of an MG will likely look eclectic, often with many pivots. MGs often feel as though there is something wrong with them for not being able to choose one thing, but this in fact is their gift. They are here to show the world just what is possible!
Strategy: To Respond
The same as a Generator, MGs are here to respond and tune into their sacral to help them make decisions. Things move fast in an MGs world so it is even more crucial they really check in with their inner authority before saying YES to ensure they are committing to the right thing at the right time, because it is a sure fire way to dim an MGs sparkle when they have taken on projects or made agreements that just don’t fulfil them. As well as responding, MGs can find it really helpful to inform and keep people in the loop when they are taking actions — particularly a big pivot.
Signature Theme: Satisfaction & Peace · Not-Self Theme: Frustration & Anger
Projectors — The Guides (approx. 22% of the population)
Projectors are the visionaries. The wisdom-keepers and the seers. These are the ones who see what others miss and know instinctively how to bring out the best in those around them. Projectors are particularly wise about people and systems and are true guides of humanity. Their gifts lies not in doing, but in seeing, so a huge part of self understanding as a Projector is to understand that their value is not measured by productivity and the amount they do. It is all about their unique and powerful insight. Projectors need to watch they don’t compare their output to a Generator or Manifesting Generator as they are designed to work in a completely different way, resting and honouring the ebb and flow of their energy throughout the day.
Strategy: Wait for the Invitation
This is one of the most misunderstood strategies. It doesn’t mean doing nothing, it means that in the waiting, a Projector can deepen their wisdom and refine their gifts so that when the invitation does arrive, they are fully ready to step forward. When a Projector shares their incredible insight without the invitation (i.e unsolicited advice) it can be met with resistance and lead to Projectors feeling unseen or under appreciated. When they wait for genuine recognition, their insights land exactly where they need to. That said, being visible is hugely important for a Projector as without being seen for their gifts and wisdom there can be no invitation.
Signature Theme: Success · Not-Self Theme: Bitterness
Reflectors — The Mirrors (approx. 1% of the population)
Reflectors are the rarest type, and they are truly extraordinary beings. The wise souls. With no defined centres in their chart, they are wide open and able to take in and reflect back the energy of the communities and environments around them. They are, in many ways, a mirror to reflect the health and alignment of the collective.
This openness is an incredible gift and yet also something that requires careful tending. The wrong environments or relationships can amplify what is out of alignment in the world, so for Reflectors, being intentional about their spaces is vital. Reflectors are not designed to be consistently the same, the only consistency in fact is in their natural shapeshifting capabilities.
Strategy: Wait a Lunar Cycle (28 days)
Where possible, Reflectors make their best decisions after allowing a full lunar cycle to pass so that they can evaluate the decision from all angles. It is also really important that Reflectors ensure the spaces and people they are surrounded feel good in their system. Keeping a daily journal through the month can be a beautiful way to track how their feelings shift and evolve and help see what decisions feel good over time. Alone time to discharge and recalibrate is absolutely imperative for Reflectors as they can absorb so much from their environment.
Signature Theme: Surprise & Delight · Not-Self Theme: Disappointment
What next?
My suggestion is to let the information above sink in and start playing with your strategy in little ways through your days. Try spending the next week experimenting with attuning yourself to your energy type and see where it takes you. If you are anything like I was when I first discovered Human Design, you will likely be pleasantly surprised at what opportunities might present themselves.
The next piece of the puzzle I suggest you work with is your Authority — your inner decision maker. I will share more about the 7 different authorities of Human Design in my next article.
If you feel called to explore what this means to you individually in a deeper way, I invite you to book a Human Design Reading with me here to see how you can use this information to align you deeper to the work your heart and soul are calling you towards.
