Five Journal Prompts to Deepen Self Connection

Journaling has become a really powerful practice for me over the years - and has lead me to some really deep healing and ‘ah ha’ moments.

In this blog post I am sharing five of the most powerful questions I have found, to help me create more connection to myself and cultivate a deeper sense of self awareness.

These are simple questions that might seem obvious - but when we bring pen to paper and actually let ourselves answer them reflectively - they can be very healing.

You can choose one or all of the following journal prompts to dive into. Try not to overthink the process and write as though you are speaking the words - just let them flow onto the paper.

If you are worried about someone seeing them then you can always tear them up afterwards, or burn them (safely of course).

Prompt 1

What am I grateful for?

If there is only one thing that I write down in my journal each day it is this. I start each morning with at least three things I am grateful for. Focusing on what we do have - instead of what we don’t have - is a powerful way to create a more abundant way of being - and it is also a lovely way to start a journaling session - especially if you have a blank piece of paper and feel a little overwhelmed.

Prompt 2

How do I feel right now?

Note down how you feel physically, mentally, energetically and emotionally. How do you feel in your body and in your mind? Do you feel tired, or energised? Wired or worried? This can just be a bullet point list or you can actually answer it as though you were speaking it out loud to someone. This journaling question serves as a little check in to see where you are at, or highlight the parts of you that need a little extra care.

Prompt 3

What do I need to thrive?

Asking yourself what you need is powerful - even if you don’t write it down. Note down all that you need in your body, your mind, your emotions and also your heart and soul. What might you be craving? What do you need in order to feel your ‘best self’? We spend so much of our time worrying about other people’s needs - sometimes we forget to connect to our own. By asking this question of ourselves and honouring the answer - we are showing ourselves that we are worthy of having our needs met and also listening to, and empowering, our own inner wisdom.

Prompt 4

Is there something I am not being honest with myself about?

This is sometimes really challenging to ask ourselves and may bring up some discomfort - but it is also very liberating. Sometimes the things we are not being truthful about to ourselves almost hold us hostage - and can fester within. If we are brutally honest - and there is no fear of upsetting or impacting someone else by speaking it - what would we admit to ourselves?

Prompt 5

What word do I want to embody today?

This is a lovely simple way of setting an intention at the beginning of the day. It is another journal prompt that can be transformational in a very short period of time - especially useful on the days where time is tight. How do you want to feel for the day ahead? What one word would you like as your anchor to help you through your day. It might be… grounded, peaceful, calm, energised… whatever it is you desire - write the word down and return to it throughout your day as your guiding star.

I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR IF YOU FIND THESE PROMPTS USEFUL, OR HAVE ANY ‘AH HA’ MOMENTS WHEN YOU START EXPLORING THEM.

As always please do comment below, or connect with me personally if you wish to share something or ask a question about anything that arises.
